Solo Harp: The Best of Yolanda Kondonassis is drawn from her discography on Telarc, going back to her first album in 1993, Scintillation, and continuing through a selection of her other CDs, A New Baroque, Pictures of the Floating World, Quietude, The Romantic Harp, and Salzedo’s Harp. Kondonassis selected these tracks herself, not so much to highlight her catalog, but to mark her most memorable and personally satisfying moments in a 20-year recording career. The harpist’s harpist, Carlos Salzédo, is well-represented in four tracks, Chanson dans la nuit, Scintillation, Rumba, and Boléro, and his virtuoso techniques are central to modern harp playing and this artist’s dazzling style. Yet Kondonassis most often approaches the music she plays for its expressive sublimity and musicality, rather than for its showiness, so even though the brilliance of her technique is always apparent, much of the music of the program is quiet and atmospheric. Choosing music by Salzédo, Gabriel Pierné, Marcel Grandjany, J.S. Bach, Camille Saint-Saëns, Erik Satie, George Gershwin, and Alphonse Hasselmans, Kondonassis has created an agreeable mix of display pieces and serious meditations, and the effect of this collection is to present Kondonassis not only as a world-class technician, but above all as a well-rounded musician.
