Blue HighwaysJAZZ Jazz News July - Aug. 1998 Blue Highways Azica Jazz AJD-72207 RIAS Big Band Question No. 1, of course, is, "Who is Paul Ferguson and why is the RIAS Big Band playing his music?" So glad you asked. Composer/ trombonist Ferguson, who lives in Ohio, won the 1995 Gil Evans Fellowship in Jazz Composition from the International Association of Jazz Educators, and shows clearly on Blue Highways that the honor was well-deserved. Simply put, Ferguson is a bright new star among big-band composers, and Blue Highways is an unqualified delight from start to finish. The RIAS band is outstanding, as is its guest soloist, Brazilian trumpet master Claudio Roditi. A clear winner.
